The proteus and the caves
The proteus is the only cave-dwelling vertebrate in Europe. Two sub-species of proteus reside in Slovenia: white proteus (Proteus anguinus anguinus Laurenti 1768)
White-tailed eagle
Measuring from 69 to 91 cm, the white-tailed eagle is one of the large birds of pray in Slovenia. Even more. It is a true glider with its wing span between 220 and 250 cm.
White-backed woodpecker
The male white-backed woodpecker has a red crown. Both, male and female are predominantly black, with white coloured breast and red coloured abdomen and undertail.
Three-toed woodpecker
The male three-toed woodpecker is the only bird of the order Piciformes with a yellow patch on the top of the head. The size of the bird is 16.5 cm. This bird species is not timid.
Hazel grouse
The hazel grouse is one of the small members of grouse family measuring about 35 cm and weighing between 400 and 450 grams.
Western capercaillie
The male (cock) of the western capercaillie is of a darker colour than the female (hen); it grows up to 90 cm and weighs about 5 kg.
