LIFE is the EU’s funding mechanism that supports environmental nature conservation and climate actions. Main contributions of LIFE are implementation and development of EU environmental policy and legislation, the integration of environmental concerns into other policies with the aim of contributing to sustainable development and financing of measures and projects with the added value.
The 2007 – 2013 period was the fourth phase of the LIFE programme. The total programme budget for funding projects during the period covered amounts to €2.2 billion
LIFE consists of three sections:
- Nature and Biodiversity,
- Environment Policy and Governance,
- Information and Communication.
The LIFE Nature section supports projects that contribute to the implementation of the Habitat Directive and Birds Directive and is the main funding mechanism to support the development and implementation of projects related to the management of Natura 2000 sites. This thematic section also includes the LIFE Kočevsko project.
The new financial Instrument for the 2014-2020 period was adopted in December 2013.
