Study field trip to Stainz
On Friday, October 20 2017, a team of Slovenian Forest Service employees (foresters and hunters operating in the central zone of western capercaillie in the Natura 2000 area of Kočevsko) paid a visit to Count Merans estate in Steinz, Austria. About one third of his 2200 hectares estate, forest management is adapted to the welfare of the western capercaillie.
Excursion was led by dr. Hubertom Zeilerjem, grouse expert. It has been emphasized on several occasions that the mosaic structure of the forest is necessary in forest management. The field trip gave us a great insight in appropriate forest management practices for providing optimal habitat for western capercaillie.
