Results on hazel grouse monitoring in Kočevsko now online
LIFE Kočevsko project team and DOPPS-Birdlife Slovenia recently completed activities within D1 action: Measurements of the impact of concrete field actions using monitoring indicators of the target species and habitats.
During last year’s winter a snow tracking survey was conducted, aiming to record previously unknown locations of the hazel grouse in Kočevsko area. Additionally, an acoustic survey was conducted, using play-back method, combined with a special whistle, designed to attract the hazel grouse. We planned to use nylon nets for capturing individual animals and attaching tracking devices to monitor their movement.
The survey was conducted from 78 calling stations. The hazel grouse was recorded at 7 locations. Unfortunately, we were not able to catch any of the animals. Nevertheless, new data is extremely valuable due to the species’ low population densities in Kočevsko. The data offers an insight into species’ habitat requirements.
All hazel grouse individuals were found in mostly corniferous forest areas with rich undergrowth. Results show that hazel grouse is present in Kočevsko in areas with suitable habitat in very low population densities.
