The Nut Tree in Kočevska Reka
Next to the church stands the widest nut tree in Slovenia, which is over 400 years of age. At chest height its circumference measures 434 cm and it is 15 m high. The Kočevje region has quite a harsh climate which is not really favourable for nut trees. However, the fact that the widest nut tree is growing here matches the findings that trees of extreme measurements can be found in extreme natural conditions, at the edge of their area. Under the tree there is a stone bench with the carved year of 1696. In the past the village men would gather here and make important decisions.
