We took part in annual wood grouse survey in Pokljuka

On Thursday, 11 May 2017, LIFE Kočevsko project team from SFS Kočevje took part in the annual wood grouse monitoring, organized by SFS Bled. Since the western capercaillie is one of our projects target species, we were very happy to participate in the survey and share experience. The monitoring in the Pokljuka Sports Center area has been in progress for the last 9 years.
The team split into in 3 groups. Each of them visited an individual lekking site. All 3 sites were very active, with 3-5 males present at each site. Some of the participants even got the opportunity to closely observe the capercaillie singing on a branch of the singing tree.
Being part of this years survey was a valuable experience for LIFE Kočevsko team. Hopefully concrete measures implemebted within our project will contribute to providing a suitable habitat for the wood grouse. We are looking forward being able to observe these birds in lekking sites in Kočevsko as well.
