Inventory of the baseline status of the target species Eurasian three-toad woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus) and white-baked woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos) – Action A2
In order to maximize the effectiveness of concrete conservation actions in the field we need to ensure optimal spatial location of the planned actions. At the moment there is a lack of systematically collected data on presence of two of the target species Eurasian three-toad woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus) and white-baked woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos). The aim of Action A2 is to record the baseline conditions of the population of these two species. In order to achieve this Slovenia forest service with the help of external contractor will carry out a survey following an established method with point counts at over 400 selected points.
On Friday, 20.2.2015, SFS carried out an educational field trip at KE Kočevska reka where we learned about the biology of both woodpecker species and the methodology of the systematic survey. For this task we will use purchased loudspeakers and mp3 players to attract territorial males and females by playing the territorial drumming.
Within the next week we will continue with education for other local units of Slovenia forest service in KE Rog, KE Pugled, KE Ribnica and KE Travna gora.
