Beginning of pole-size stand tree marking in Briga forest management unit
This April, LIFE Kočevsko project team started implementing measures, aiming to improve diet options for the two endangered woodpecker species in the area: the white-backed and the three-toed woodpecker. In Briga, implementation of the conservation measures is in process, as well as in most other forest management units within Natura 2000 Kočevsko
Tree thinning by girdling will be carried out in pole-size stand of trees (Hacquetio–Fagetum zonal forest association – submontane beech forest ) in size of 26,69 ha.
Tree marking is mostly going well, even though April weather did cause us some difficulties. At higher altitudes (630-870 m) completion of our work was delayed for 3 days due to unexpected snow.
Field work and tree marking is challenging due to many fallen trees, caused by the ice storm in 2014. We are very optimistic about our work coming to an end in May.
