Pole stand thinning started in Kolpa forest management unit
In order to improve feeding habitat of the white-backed woodpecker, LIFE Kočevsko project team coordinated marking of trees for thinning in pole stands between 13 and 17 March 2017. Thinning will increase quantities of dead deciduous wood, an important habitat for invertebrates, key food source for the endangered woodpecker species.
The fieldwork was very challenging because of dense forest cover and rocky terrain. We were very happy to receive help and great advice from the former district forester in the area.
